Over the Weekend (14/15 September) Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club hosted the final round of the 2024 CPA British Championship! The first class to take to the water on were the GT30s. All eyes were on Mason Jessup and Jonny Brewer as both drivers headed into the event level on points at the top of the Championship table. Another big talking point was the return of Ashley Penfold and George Elmore, both previous champions in this class. As qualifying got underway, it was clear to see that Ashley was keen to pick up from where he left off last season as very quickly went straight to the top of the timing board and claimed pole position. Ashley continued to show the pace of his new boat by dominating the Weekend, taking the win in all 4 heats. George Elmore also showed that he still had his GT30 driving skills, finishing all 4 heats in a strong 2nd place in the newly designed Tintorera / Atlee boat. Jessup and Brewer were left to fight for 3rd and 4th positions but it was Jonny Brewer who just came out on top with a 3rd place overall, followed by Mason Jessup, Brad Leeson, Madelyn Duncan and Darrell Hibbert. A 3rd place finish for Jonny Brewer and a 4th place finish for Mason Jessup means that Jonny Brewer is the 2024 CPA GT30 British Champion!Next in action was the OSY400 class. Reigning champion James Bowman just needed to finish at the back of the pack to secure the 2024 title. Bowman dominated at the first 2 rounds securing pole position and a win and both events. James continued to dominate taking pole position and won 3/4 heats after a slight starting issue in heat 2 which resulted in a nail-biting photo finish for P2 with Brian Shulver. Ben Sallis and Brian Shulver continued their season-long battle but it was Sallis who got the better of Shulver this time around, finishing P2. Shulver completed the podium places in P3 and P4 went to Jason Peak. After taking maximum points from all 3 rounds, James Bowman is the 2024 CPA OSY400 British Champion! The third class to take to the water were our junior racers in the GT15 class. Last year's champion Poppy Stewart repeated her form from the first 2 rounds by dominating qualifying and taking the win in all 4 heats. With Poppy ahead in the distance the young boys of Tate Mantripp, Riley Hudson and Jared Duncan were left to fight for the remaining positions. Tate Mantripp was the best of the rest finishing a solid P2. Finishing off the podium was Riley Hudson, closely followed by Jared Duncan in P4. With 3/3 Pole Positions and 3/3 Wins across the year, Poppy Stewart once again took the title making her the 2024 CPA GT15 British Champion! The final class to take to the water over the weekend were the thrilling Formula 2 boats. After the first 2 rounds the Championship was lead by Sam Whittle, just one point ahead of Steve Hoult. Both these drivers are previous British Champions in Formula 2 and as qualifying got underway it was clear to see there was a real battle going on as lap after lap, Sam and Steve traded places at the top of the timing screen. It was Sam Whittle who took Pole Position on the very last lap. This was a huge advantage in the races as Whittle powered home to 4 heat wins which was exactly what he needed to clinch the 2024 title. Despite his best efforts, Hoult had to settle for 2nd place. 3rd place went to Australian entry Damon Cohen who made the 25 hour trip over to race in the Powertech Marine BaBa boat. It was great to see Damon pushing the boat hard against the British Drivers. 4th place went to Lewis Houben. After a miserable start to the Year, Sam Whittle bounced back in Rounds 2 & 3 to become the 2024 CPA Formula 2 British Champion. One class missing was the Formula 4 Class. After a big incident at the CPA British Sprint Championship in August which sidelined 2 drivers, there was not enough entries for the final rounds to go ahead. This meant that the points from Rounds 1 & 2 would make up the Championship and it was George Elmore who had dominated both of these rounds, making him the 2024 CPA Formula 4 British Champion! Here's your Round 3 Winners:🥇 GT15: Poppy Stewart🥇 GT30: Ashley Penfold🥇 OSY400: James Bowman🥇 F2: Sam WhittleAnd the 2024 CPA British Championship Podium Places:GT15🥇 Poppy Stewart (63 Points) 🥈 Jared Duncan (45 Points)🥉 Tate Mantripp (43 Points)GT30🥇 Jonny Brewer (53 Points) 🥈 Mason Jessup (51 Points)🥉 Madelyn Duncan (36 Points)OSY400🥇 James Bowman (63 Points) 🥈 Brian Shulver (49 Points)🥉 Ben Sallis (47 Points)F4🥇 George Elmore (42 Points) 🥈 Mike Pillow (34 Points)🥉 Oban Duncan (26 Points)F2🥇 Sam Whittle (55 Points) 🥈 Steve Hoult (50 Points)🥉 Lewis Houben (41 Points)** All event results and CPA British Champions are subject to ratification and Technical InspectionsThank you to all the officials and volunteers at LPRC and all the other clubs throughout the Year.📸: Lee Prewer, Mike Gauckwin & Phil Topping#CPA #BPBA #BritishChampions ... Circuit Powerboat Association
Statement from the CPA Board 06/08/2024:On Saturday 3rd August 2024 at the CPA British Sprint Championship event held at Stewartby Lake, Bedfordshire an unfortunate racing collision occurred during heat 2 of the Formula 4 class involving boat number 42 (Michael Pillow) and boat 14 (George Elmore) resulting in both boats receiving heavy damage. Unfortunately, because of the collision, the driver of boat 42 Michael Pillow sustained serious injuries whilst the driver of boat 14 George Elmore sustained minor injuries. As is standard practice in these types of situation, the Circuit Powerboat Association in conjunction with the British Power Boat Association, have commenced a full review of the incident. While this review is ongoing there will be no further updates from the Circuit Powerboat Association in relation to this matter until the review is concluded. We are very pleased to update you all that Michael Pillow’s recovery is positively progressing albeit he is still receiving constant care from the excellent ICU medical team of Addenbrookes hospital. Mike has been racing since the early 1980’s and in this time has become a very well respected competitor, we all know his hard style of driving and determination to win will help in this latest, unfortunate challenge. We send our very best wishes to Mike for his continued recovery and our thoughts and support are with Mike’s wife Julie and their family, who are all understandably experiencing a stressful and upsetting period while they support Mike in his recovery. Finally, the Circuit Powerboat Association would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our officials and rescue teams who dealt the incident professionally and with the upmost integrity to ensure a positive outcome was achieved. ...
